Pay close attention to the little issues that often accompany excess traffic in your home. Two areas that typically get little use throughout the year but are fully occupied during the holidays, are guest baths and spare bedrooms. Rarely will your guests actually use the bath tub, so a common remodel for a guest bath includes a bath tub to shower conversion.

If you are the preparer of holiday meals, now is the perfect time to evaluate your kitchen. So often homeowners focus on the aesthetics and gathering aspects of their kitchen, that they don’t take the time to fully evaluate how their kitchen could be more efficient for cooking. Make sure you analyze your food preparation areas along with your food serving surfaces. When it’s time to design your new counters, you can take these into consideration so that preparing a holiday meal can be done with ease.

If you will not be at home during the holidays and instead will be visiting family or friends, take notes on what aspects of their home works well for their guests and what areas could use some work. You will be able to use these evaluations when considering new designs for your home.

Take a few moments during the holidays and your remodeling project’s design will be better for it.

After deciding to remodel your home, a common issue homeowners find when talking to contractors is that most contractors do not offer any sort of help with interior design. So this raises the question if hiring an interior designer is even necessary for the success of your remodeling project.

There are many homeowners who pride themselves on their ability to coordinate colors, furniture arrangements, artwork, rugs, drapes, and accessories. These homeowners can potentially save themselves thousands in interior designer costs by making all the remodeling product selections on their own. Furthermore, nobody truly understands a person’s sense of style like themselves. This can also make the communication of a remodeling project better because there is one less company involved.

But what if you are like the majority of people who know what looks good but not what it takes to get that great look? An interior designer can be the single greatest asset to the completion of your remodeling project. Whenever you feel dis-empowered to make a decision, or feel overwhelmed when making product selections, that is when an interior designer can make the process much easier. An interior designer is an expert in coordination, layout, and the creation of masterful spaces. The collective decorating of a home over many years can create a common obstacle when remodeling, and that is the need to integrate the old with the new. Weaving these eclectic decorative collections together is a learned skilled that an experienced interior designer can provide insight on.

When it comes down to it, hiring an interior designer for your remodeling project will increase the odds of a successful outcome. Just like with other aspects of your remodeling project, like painting, you could do yourself, but it is best to leave it to the professionals to make your new space perfect.

An unfortunate trend over the past few years is the increasing number of home builders trying their hand out in the remodeling industry. Due to the lack of new homes sales and the increasing demand for remodeling, these builders have now looked to the remodeling industry to put their crews to work and sustain them until new homes sales are back on the rise. There are many important reasons why builders are ineffective as remodelers and homeowners should be aware of hiring them for remodeling projects.

Builders are excellent at building houses, it’s what they do. However, building is their profession, not remodeling. Both the builder and their crews are not used to working in a home that is already lived in. They are used to working with the radio on and leaving a trail of debris from the constructed house to the street. Typically, builders work at job sites and not homes. They don’t have the processes in place or are properly trained on how to keep your home clean while protecting your family and belongings.

Another issue we have noticed with builders in the remodeling industry is their inability to price projects correctly. Remember that they typically do not have to deal with impact areas of a remodel. They might not understand that remodeling a kitchen could effect several other spaces in your home and not price accordingly. This could result in numerous change orders which will ultimately drive up the cost for the homeowner.

At some point the new home construction market will swing back and these builders will be back to doing their full-time jobs, building houses, while forgetting their remodeling customers. Choose a full-time remodeling firm thats focus is on this industry and will be there for you for years to come.

Design-Build Remodeling is a concept developed to benefit the homeowner with his or her remodeling project by providing both quality design and construction services within the same company. A design-build remodeling firm will be able to see your project through from start to finish, keeping design, engineering and budget in mind. The Design-Build Advantage:

Imagine the benefits of making a single phone call to a team that can handle your entire construction project.

From initial conceptual drawings, budgets, permits, feasibility studies and working drawings to the actual construction and final walk-through, we employ experts in their field to complete each step.

Developing the design in-house eliminates time-consuming and costly errors.

Detail and investigative work are completed up front, all but eliminating surprises during construction.

The timeframe from design to completion is significantly reduced.

Most important of all—design-build gives you a single source of accountability.

Be aware of Remodelers using “design-build” incorrectly

Unfortunately a lot of remodelers misuse the term “design-build” and mislead their clients by using “Contract Designers”. These remodelers state that they have interior designers or that they are a design-build remodeler but they use “Contract Designers”. “Contract Designers” are designers that are not actually employees for those remodelers but rather a third-party company also known as a subcontractor.

Ask any potential remodeler if their interior designer is actually an employee or a subcontractor. The design of your remodeling project is one of the most important aspects to the overall outcome of the finished product. How can you trust a remodeler who claims to be a design-build remodeling company but subcontracts the design portion out?

You could go the route of checking local plumbing and electrical supply houses or shop online.

The advantages and disadvantages of purchasing your remodeling fixtures online are not too different than buying anything online. The number one advantage of purchasing online typically is price. With the low overhead cost of a website, often they are able to offer plumbing and electrical fixtures for 20% – 30% off list price. The savings off list price can be destroyed rather quickly by any shipping and handling costs. Often you will find these sites offering free shipping on purchases over a certain dollar amount. Due to the amount of fixtures typically needed in a remodel, that dollar amount isn’t hard to meet.

Another advantage of purchasing online is of course convenience. Often local plumbing and electrical fixture stores have inconvenient hours of operation and are seldom open on the weekends. When purchasing online, you can view thousands of options and at any time of the day or night. You will also save money and time by not having to drive from showroom to showroom looking for a particular style or finish.

Buying online sounds pretty great with all the pricing and convenience advantages however, there are many reasons why one should consider buying locally. One huge disadvantage to purchasing online is that you will not be able to see the product in person. Typically the photos of fixtures online are limited and you never quite know how something will look until you have it in front of you. This is where buying from a local supply house makes all the difference. Often these local stores not only have the fixtures on display but in some cases actually have working versions of the fixture. Obviously being able to see how a shower head or body sprayers deliver water is a tremendous advantage to the consumer. You want to know that a fixture has the absolute perfect finish and functions the way you want it to.

Finally the biggest disadvantage of purchasing online is returns and warranty services. Even if you scored free shipping when purchasing the fixtures, you can bet that you will have to spend the money to ship any products back to the online retailer. Another thing to keep in mind is that fixtures are usually the last item to be installed when remodeling a bathroom or kitchen. Often the plumber or electrician will not open the fixture to examine it until it is ready to be installed. If for whatever reason there is an issue with the fixture, you will have to face some potential serious down time while you wait for a online retailer to swap it out for you. If you had purchased it locally, you would more than likely be able to get it swapped out the same day.

In the end it comes down to cost savings versus peace of mind. For clients that have gone through online purchasing issues before, they know that peace of mind is invaluable. Hopefully you didn’t choose your remodeling company based on price alone, so your remodeling fixture selections shouldn’t be any different. Spend a little extra to avoid surprises and disappointments when you reach the end of your remodeling project and I promise you will be pleased with the results for years to come.

Today people are getting more interested in making energy-efficient houses for many different reasons but ultimately to save money. There is one thing that has stopped many people from making their house more energy-efficient. They wonder if doing it will cost them too much money which would defeat the purpose in the first place.

Sure, if you’re planning to install a solar water heater or rebuild your house to be more environment-friendly, you can take out your wallet and make sure there’re no holes inside, but really, making your house energy efficient is neither too expensive, nor too time-consuming.

In fact, some simple steps that you can take will easily do the job for you.

Turn off lights and fans/A/Cs when you’re not in the room.

Set you’re A/C temperature at 78 fahrenheit. That is cool enough to keep you comfortable. Keep it at a temperature that won’t use up too much electricity. Also, if the weather outside is pleasant, opt to open a window rather than turning on the A/C.

Plant trees and shrubs outside your house. Another thing you can do is to extend your window sill on whichever side you’re more comfortable with, and place pots there.

Replace incandescent light bulbs with CFLs. CFLs are not only more energy-efficient, they also last longer. In fact, CFLs are so energy-efficient that if you leave the room for short periods of time, leaving the light on will consume less energy than turning it off. Sometimes, however, people are not comfortable with the light that CFLs give out. In such cases, just remember that yellow light takes up a lot more energy than white light, and that tube lights are also a healthier option than bulbs.

Make sure your walls are properly insulated. This prevents the heat outside from filtering in on hot days, and the heat from inside filtering out during winter. If your house has no wall insulation, blown-in insulation will help save enough energy to be cost-effective.

If you are changing your windows, consider replacing them with energy-efficient models. If replacing your windows is not an option, consider installing a UV blocking window film.

Repair all leaking faucets and pipes. This should save you quite some water. Remember to turn off the tap when you’re brushing your teeth or washing dishes, etc. Also, install energy efficient shower heads.

Make sure your air conditioner is always running at peak efficiency. Clean air filters at least once a month; dirty filters consume a lot of energy.

And lastly, schedule an energy audit for expert advice on your home. Conduct a home energy audit to determine the largest savings potential for your house. You can either conduct one yourself, or call an independent auditor for a more detailed examination.

Each Christmas, we spend hours surrounded by shiny bows, scotch tape, and tissue paper, wrapping box after box Yet, one box in particular is often neglected for it tends to cause decorating dilemmas—the home. The home is the ultimate box that deserves festive wrapping, and there are few steps you can take to make dressing up your home manageable and fun. When you dress up your home for Christmas there are a few things you need to keep in mind. There are two key aspects to remember, one is the exterior of your home and one is the interior. You need to plan well in advance if you are decorating your home for the first time. If you have done it before, all you will need to do is look into the attic and get into action with your box titled Christmas decorations.

Before we go on to the decor that will line the interior and the exterior of your house, you have to focus on the Christmas tree. Don’t get a plastic Christmas tree, spend some money and get the best bush you can get your hands on. Make sure it’s green and tall enough so as to not over power everyone at home. There are a number of things you can do to your Christmas tree and decorations to adorn it can be found in a number of stores, take your children along with you when you shop for decorations, involving them in the process makes them feel special. To decorate the Christmas tree you could get lights that you could spread all across the tree, you could also get silver and gold treads, candies, angels and stars are a must have on any Christmas tree.

When you decorate the interior of you home, two elements you should not forget and start off with are mistletoe and stockings. Line the stockings on the fireplace mantle and use some ribbons and decorations to doll up the place. Make sure you have mistletoe hung up all over the living area and at the door, so that people can have some fun while you are entertaining them.

The exterior of your home needs to look like all the city’s lights have come alive at your home. Make sure you get enough lights to decorate the entire outer area. You could have the guiding star of a wreathe on your door as a welcome charm for the guests.

Christmas is indeed one of the best holidays. And decorating one’s home gives immense joy to everyone involved. If you have a big family, make sure everyone is involved in the process. A few tips to Christmas decoration would be to use colors that match the spirit of the occasion, that is red, white and green. Use a lot of lights and brighten up the lives of those around you. Do not forget the stockings, mistletoe and Christmas tree. Christmas is not the same without these three elements. The best piece of decoration however is the people in your life, so make sure you get some Santa caps and sing many carols.

Home improvement myth #1: You can’t go wrong with fashion

Whereas fashion in all very well, especially probably in a magazine picture, you have to be careful while incorporating it in your house. Fashion concerning the house is almost the same as clothes fashion – most are designed for the look, and not for comfort. Just remember to keep your own comfort in mind – and not to ape fashion as you see it. Personalize it for a homier feeling.
Another thing to remember about fashion is; it is never the same. Fashion always changes – for one minute, pink flooring and mauve walls might be in fashion. But as soon as it is out of fashion, your house will only look ridiculous. Trust your better judgment, choose mostly neutral colors – or even if you do want to be adventurous, choose tried and tested combinations to give your house a timeless feel.

Home improvement myth #2: Any kind of remodeling is good

This is another reason fashion should not be followed. Whereas remodeling might be a good idea, stick to neutrals. If you remodel, and it turns out to be unsuitable for the buyer, you won’t sell. As simple as that. You might think a built-in pool table in the living room is good, but are you sure the next buyer will think the same?

Home improvement myth #3: I can save money by doing it myself.

You might be able to tackle small projects by yourself, but remodeling – especially on a large scale is a job for a professional. After all, professionals are trained for just this reason; there are a lot of minute details that we wouldn’t even know about to be able to go into. That’s why a professional is required – not to take over the project, but to give make sure that it goes off without a hitch.

Home improvement myth #4: “Going green” is expensive

There are expensive ways of doing it, but there are a lot of cheaper ways of doing it as well. ‘Going green’ is not a fashion statement, it’s a lifestyle change. And lifestyle changes are not necessarily expensive.
Here are a few ways of going green that will actually save you money:

•	See what the temperature is outside. If it is cool enough that you won’t need the a/c, or warm enough that you won’t need the thermostat, don’t use them. Also, when you’re using them, adjust the temperature so that they’re comfortable – neither too warm, nor too cold.
•	Electronic devices like the TV, DVD player, etc still use electricity when they’re not on. Turn off the power switch when not in use.
•	Try using a bucket to bathe, or turn off the shower when you’re soaping yourself, or the faucet when you’re brushing your teeth or washing dishes, etc.

Home improvement myth #5: Swimming pools add value

It depends on whether the person buying it will be able to afford a swimming pool. Swimming pools are expensive, and if the climate doesn’t allow for a pool, having one will only backfire.

Did you know that depending on the types of windows and doors that you have in your home that they could be costing you a fortune? If the windows and doors that you have in your home aren’t properly keeping in the heat or cold then you could be throwing your money out the window. Today’s windows and doors are built with energy saving in mind. They are made to keep in the heat in the winter and keep in the cold in the summer; otherwise you are basically heating or cooling the outside as well. In this article we will discuss why it is a good reason to install new windows and doors into your home.

New windows and doors will make your bills lower

When you are heating your home and the windows are not keeping the heat inside of the house your furnace is working much harder then it should be. And the harder your furnace works the more expensive your heating bill will be. This is the same in the summer time; quality windows and doors will keep your bills more affordable.

More energy efficient

Replacing your windows or your doors will make your home more energy efficient. This is mainly due to your furnace and air conditioners will not need to work harder than they need therefore saving energy. When people leave their air conditioner on all day it takes up a lot of energy and if their windows are letting out the air then it is wasted energy.

You can save much more money then you expect

Did you know that the government will cover some of the cost of you replacing your windows and doors or at least give you some cash back? The government wants to encourage everyone to do their best to conserve energy and one of the ways that they are encouraging people is by giving them incentives to do so. So when you look at the cost of door and window replacement, be sure to look into how much you can save by way of the government programs.

Improving the efficiency of your home is good for the planet but also good for your family. Although you may look at replacing your windows and doors as being expensive if you calculate how much that you will save in the next couple of years then it will be a no brainer.
